The Role of Emotional Intelligence, Core Self-Evaluation, Perceived-Stress and Academic Abilities in Relation to Career Decision Making Difficulties

You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to understand how Emotional Intelligence, Core Self-Evaluation, Academic ability and Perceived stress can impact career decision-making difficulties in higher education students. Studies suggested that career decision making difficulties may lead to long term consequences, such as making a less-than optimal decision regarding the type of job (Gati, Amir & Landman, 2010) or making a conclusive decision regarding a job that in the end may be less than ideal for the person (Gati, Asulin-Peretz & Fisher, 2012). This study aims to understand how these variables may influence career decision-making difficulties.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because you are a student of a University based in Scotland and are over the age of 18.

Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to sign an online consent form and create a memorable word. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw without giving a reason, within 2 weeks of completing the survey by contacting the researcher with your memorable word.

What will happen to me if I take part?
If you decide to take part to the study, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire designed to explore your career decision making skills, and perceptions of your emotional intelligence, self (personality traits), academic abilities and perceived stress. The questionnaire will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There should not be any anticipated risks or disadvantages in taking part in the study, however, if you feel you may become upset by any of the above topics then please consider not participating. Remember that you can stop completing the questionnaire at any point.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Benefits of participating in the study are that you will help researchers in understanding what are the factors that influence the career decision making process, and by doing so you will help future students and university professionals understand the factors that influence career decision-making difficulties.
